Elon Musk Twitter Takeover: Billionaire Plans to Buy Coca-Cola Next

Since news of the Elon Musk Twitter takeover was announced earlier this week, many social media users have been offering suggestions about other companies that Musk should purchase.

The billionaire has joined in on the fun by teasing that his next target is beverage giant, Coca-Cola. The Tesla boss posted a tweet on Thursday joking that he was going to buy Coca-Cola to “put the cocaine back in” the drink.

While Musk’s comment about Coca-Cola is only a joke, it does hold some truth. Coca-Cola, or “Coke” as it is fondly called in Nigeria, once contained the banned narcotics.

Back in 1885 when Coke was first brewed by pharmacist John Pemberton, it contained cocaine.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, cocaine was legal in 1885. Pemberton’s recipe included cocaine extract obtained from coca leaves.

The use of the drug in the drink was eventually eliminated in the 1900s as it became illegal in America.

A Twitter user also confirmed Musk’s statement by sharing a photo of the first publicly-sold bottle of Coca-Cola in 1894. The product contained 3.5 grams of cocaine.

Twitter accepted Musk’s $44 billion offer to buy the company earlier this week. The world’s richest person had criticized the social media platform for failing to embrace free speech.
