This follows news that the government had set up a committee last month to investigate the planned tariff hike by the company
The Nigerian Senate has warned MultiChoice, Nigeria’s largest pay-tv operator against increasing the cost of its tariff.
The order was issued by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan in Abuja Tuesday. The decision comes after the senate inaugurated a seven-member Ad hoc Committee to investigate the circumstances around the proposed hike.
Lawan urged that the DStv and GOtv owners respect their Nigerian consumers, as the country provides a favorable climate for business.
Lawan’s original statement can be partly seen below:
“No increase. And that is to say, don’t dare our country. No increase in tariffs,”
The Senate president also noted that foreign companies are notorious for treating their Nigerian customers in a manner that is not consistent with global best practices.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the investigative committee, Sen. Abdullah said:
“It is mind-boggling that barely two years after a price hike by Multichoice, which was followed by a big uproar by Nigerians, comes another unexpected increment without proper consultation with critical stakeholders.”
To put an end to the tariff hike, the Senate advised the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, and the Nigerian Communications Commission to direct all pay-tv providers to introduce a pay-per-view model of subscription.
It will be recalled that Multichoice announced an increase to the tariff of DStv and GOtv packages in March.
