Nigerian politician, Engineer Anthony Funsho Williams was assassinated in his home in Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi in 2006.

At the time of his death, he was the favourite in the Lagos state Gubernatorial election of 2007, which makes it more mysterious.

Who was Funsho Williams?

Engineer Williams was born on May 9, 1948, in Lagos state and had his primary education in St. Paul’s Catholic School.

St Gregory’s College in Obalende was the location for his secondary education before obtaining a University Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Lagos.

He finally capped it off with a Master’s degree at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in the USA.

His Contribution to Nigeria

Engineer Williams was a civil servant for 17 years before setting up his own business.

He held directorship positions in many top companies including, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and Ajaokuta Steel Company.

Involvement in Nigerian Politics

Funsho Williams delved into Nigerian politics by forming an alliance with the United Nigeria Congress Party but he left after the death of party leader, General Sani Abacha.

He joined the People’s Democratic Party shortly after, where he contested to be the governor of Lagos State.

The tragic death of Engineer Funsho Williams

On the 27th of July 2006, Engineer Williams was assassinated inside his study in Dolphin Estate Ikoyi.

The murder time was put around 11:15 am and his wife was away in London.

Engineer Williams was manually strangled and his lungs were denied oxygen.

In addition, He was received several stabs and he was found in a pool of his blood.

Six men, namely Bulama Kolo, Tunani Sonani, Mustapha Kayode, Okponwasa Imariable, Musa Maina, and David Cassidy were arrested and tried in connection to the murder.

After 8 years behind the bar, the defendants were all discharged and acquitted.

Former Lagos state governor and the leader of all progressive people’s congress (APC), Ashiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was strongly linked with the murder due to their long-term rivalry.

Tinubu was however not convicted and nobody went down for the arrest.
