Deadly armed robbers aren’t only found in movies. They exist in reality and there was one that terrorized the residents of Lagos in the 1970s -Ishola Oyenusi.

Start of robbery career

While many people are aware that Oyenusi terrorized Lagos and neighboring cities, not many know how the robber’s career started.

Oyenusi’s first robber was a carjacking. The notorious criminal came to be when he killed a man during a carjacking because his girlfriend needed money. He ended up selling the car for N400 then.

Oyenusi was not a Doctor

Although Ishola Oyenusi was commonly known as Doctor Oyenusi, he wasn’t a Doctor. In fact, he didn’t have anything close to a tertiary degree.

Oyenusi did not attend a university. According to reports, he only completed Primary and Secondary education.


Reign of terror

Oyenusi became an armed robber and terrorized residents of Lagos after the Civil War in 1970.

He was notorious for being a cold-blooded killer and rarely left anyone alive. This made people give him the Alias “Doctor rob and kill”.

Oyenusi was so feared that when he died, nobody wanted to play his role in a movie out of fear of being killed by his gang members.

Arrogant robber

The only thing that could rival Oyenusi’s thirst for blood was his arrogance.

When Oyenusi was arrested, he was arrested by a police officer and ordered to move. The Killer’s reply was “People like you don’t talk to me when I’m armed, I gun them down”.

Capture and Death

The notorious armed robber’s reign finally came to an end on March 27, 1971. The police force caught him during a robbery, although an officer was killed in a shootout before he was subdued.

Ishola Oyenusi was sentenced to death and in those days, the execution was done publicly.

On the day of his execution, 30,000 Nigerians came out to watch Soldiers take out the notorious killer.

Although the killer tried to hide his fear, it was obvious that he was not happy to embrace the same fate that he gave many others.

He and his gang members were lined up and tied to stakes before their bodies were filled with bullets.
