USSD Suspension: This Is Why You Can’t Buy Airtime From Your Bank On Your MTN Line
MTN Nigeria has blocked its subscribers from recharging their phones and buying data using the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) codes
The USSD suspension is coming after the Telecom company allegedly reduced commissions paid out to banks for airtime recharge
FG has reportedly intervened and is set to resolve the issue between both parties
If you have tried to recharge your MTN line recently using the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) codes, you will realize that it doesn’t work.
Note: USSD codes include *737# for GT bank, *822# for Sterling bank e.t.c
The reason for the recharge failure is because Telecom company, MTN has issued a suspension on recharge services using USSD.
The USSD suspension is coming after MTN allegedly reduced its airtime recharge commission offered to banks.
MTN Nigeria confirmed the development in a mail sent to customers and banks have sent notification to customers to this effect.
A Telco partner who wished to remain anonymous alleged that the company decided to cut back on commissions paid to banks and Fintech companies.
However, Nigeria’s Minister of Communication & Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami has disclosed that the Federal Government is close to resolving the dispute between MTN and the banks.
The minister disclosed this in a statement released on Friday evening.
Pantami said that Nigerians can expect the services to be restored soon because the government is in advanced stages of discussion between both parties.
