The federal government has lifted Twitter ban in Nigeria, following the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday.
Nigerians will now be able to access the microblogging platform from midnight on Thursday when the removal of the suspension takes effect.
The development was confirmed by the Director-General National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi on Wednesday afternoon.
His statement reads:
“The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12 am tonight, 13th January 2022.”
The removal of Twitter ban in Nigeria comes 7 months after the ban was issued on 5th June 2021.

The government claimed that the ban was issued due to the use of the platform to propagate fake news and spread information that undermined the government.
Twitter is a platform of choice for many Nigerians who use the social media app to connect with other users and promote businesses and brands.
