
Nigerians To Submit Phones’ Tracking ID Numbers To NCC From July

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) stated that every citizen of Nigeria will have to submit their International Mobile Equipment Identity of their phones to them from July.

This was stated in their newly revised National Policy for Sim Card Registration.
Based on Punch’s report, It’s NCC’s plan to begin the implementation of the Device Management System (a Centralised Equipment Identity Register) directed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

It was stated in the policy that President Muhammadu Buhari ordered that the Device Mangement System should be done within three months.
The NCC stated that, one of the best ways of limit the rate of kidnapping, fake mobile phone market, phone theft, secure consumer interest, improve National Security, boost revenue generation for the government, reduce the usage of stolen phones for crimes and for easy tracking or blocking of stolen smartphones or devices, is through the implementation of Device Management System.

“The deployment of the Centralised Equipment Identity Register commonly referred to as Device Management System will be a secured storage for keeping records of all registered mobile phones’ International Mobile Equipment Identity and their owners.
Any stolen or illegal IMEIs will be shared via the DMS to all the operators and service providers.

The IMEI number is known to be the mobile phone’s fingerprint. It is a 15-digit number that’s unique for all phones. The IMEI numberaids easy tracking and locating the phone regardless of the cellular number in it.
With this innovation, the NCC will have the IMEI numbers, NIN, and mobile numbers of all Nigerians.
