The country’s laws currently allow for polygamous marriages but not polyandry
South Africa is set to do the unthinkable and legalize a policy that will allow women to marry more than one husband in the country.

The Department of Home Affairs published a 67-page policy document this week and among the proposals was the legalization of polyandry.
The department wants to create a policy that will everyone in the country to conduct legal marriages.
Many marriages are currently not recognized in the country, including Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, and Rastafarian.

According to the department of home affairs, failure to recognize a marriage from other religions is discriminatory.
Traditional leaders in the country are among those who have rejected polyandry, claiming that it is “unacceptable”.
