NARD president claims that the decision was made following an impromptu meeting with the national executive council of the association
Nigeria’s National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its nationwide strike about 2 months after it began.
As far back as August 2, NARD embarked on a strike to protest against “irregular payment of salaries” and several other issues.
Despite the intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari and the house of representatives, the association failed to back down from its strike.
This led to a suit filed by the federal government in which the National Industrial Court asked the resident doctors to return to work.
The association however failed to follow this order and vowed to appeal against the court ruling.
Now on Monday, October 4, NARD president Godiya Ishaya has announced the cancellation of the strike.

Ishaya disclosed that the strike was called off after an emergency meeting with the association’s executives. The resident doctors are expected to resume on Wednesday.
“We’ve officially suspended the strike to resume 8:00 am on Wednesday. We made the decision in the wee hours of today. We held an emergency meeting from 5:30pm on Sunday to the morning hours of today, and the NEC decided that having reviewed the progress made so far, the strike should be suspended,”
