The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo Olu has banned commercial motorcycles (Okada) from operating in 6 Local Governments in Lagos state. He said that this ban is total and indefinite.
The six Local Government Areas (LGAs) affected by the Okada ban by Governor Sanwo-Olu are Surulere, Apapa, Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Lagos Mainland.
This directive was given by the Governor during a meeting with the Commissioner of Police, Area Commanders, and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) at the State House in Aluasa, Ikeja, Lagos.
Governor Sanwo-Olu ordered the Police force to enforce this new order without compromising.
This follows a restriction that was placed on the operations of commercial motorcycles (Okada) in Lagos in February 2020.
Sanwo Olu stated that the Government took this decision in alignment with the State’s Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 to quickly address the menace that was created by the operations of Okada in the banned areas.
He stated that the restrictions that were first placed on the six Local Government Areas on February 1, 2020, didn’t reduce the menace caused by the Okada riders.
The ban on Okada operations across the bridges and highways within the affected LGAs and their Local Council Development Areas (LCDA) will be effective from June 1, 2022.
He further said that the notice is coming early, and they expect that those affected should vacate those banned areas and find something else to do before the enforcement starts.
