Adeoye Owolewa becomes first Nigerian-American elected to US congress

Adeoye Owolewa becomes the first Nigerian born American to be elected to the US congress, he was declared winner in the just concluded election that saw Trump losing his seat to Biden.

According to election results on the website of the District of Columbia Board of Elections on Wednesday morning, Owolewa polled 81.59% of the votes, which represents 164,026 votes against Joyce Robinson-Paul, who scored 18,600 votes, and Sohaer Syed with 15,372 votes.

Congress vote

Adeoye Yakubu Owolewa who is the grandson of Phoebe Ajayi-Obe, a late senior advocate of Nigeria. His father hailed from Omu Aranin Kwara Stateand his mother is from Ibadanin Oyo State. Oye grew up in Boston, the fourth in a family of seven, he attended Boston Latin Schooland graduated in 2008[3]. In 2014 He earns a PhD in Pharmacy from Northeastern Universityand thereafter moved to Washington to practice pharmacy[4]. In 2018 he became an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner of District 8E01[5]

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Owolewa wrote, “Good morning. Looks like we did it!

“I want to thank everyone, from family and close friends to DC residents.

“Because of your contributions and sacrifices, I stand before you as America’s first Nigerian-American congressman.

“In this role, I’m going to fight for DC statehood and bring our values to the lawmaking process. While today is the day for some celebration, the hard work also follows.

“Again, thanks so much for everything. I wouldn’t be here without yall.”
