As it was in 2012 when Professors applied to be Dangote Truck Drivers position so it is now as 4 Ph.D. and no fewer than 200 Masters Degree Holders have reportedly applied for the Federal Government of Nigeria’s job intervention program which seeks to employ youths to sweep and carry out sanitation for N20,000 monthly allowance.
The scale of joblessness in Nigeria is massive as even academic scholars who have Ph.D. cannot boast of a well-paying job. Many of them are managing poorly paid jobs that can barely meet their basic needs.
Without the current economic challenges, there is a big problem with job security.
Even with their high academic qualifications, many of them cannot get jobs in top federal agencies like the Central Bank of Nigeria or the Nigerian National Petroleum Commission (NNPC0 and other jobs with mouth watery allowances.
Hence, they have resorted to taking whatever is available just to survive. Controversy trailed the job after the Buhari administration assigned the recruitment to the ministry of labor.
The minister for state labor Femi Adesina had alleged that lawmakers wanted to hijack the recruitment process. If that happens, then even the Ph.D. holders and Maters Degree holders will not be certain of getting the job.
People of such academic qualifications ought to be intellectuals contributing ideas to the development of all spheres of the country but now, they are willing to do sanitation jobs of road and gutter cleaning just to earn a meager N20,000 monthly for a limited period.
