Lionel Messi has become the first player to receive fan tokens as part of his contract after completing a switch to Paris St Germain on Tuesday.

PSG revealed that the cryptocurrency was included as part of his “welcome package” but failed to disclose how much the footballer received.

Media reports have estimated the tokens the footballer received to be worth between 25 and 30 million euros.

The news could serve as a sort of endorsement for digital assets in general and the value of the fan token has more than doubled since Messi was linked with the French club.

Fan tokens are a type of digital currency that allows the holders to vote on minor decisions regarding the club.

Some top clubs such as Manchester City, AC Milan and FC Barcelona have also launched these digital currencies for their fans.

Football star Lionel Messi has a contract that runs until 2023 with PSG and he has the option of extending the contract for an additional year.
