Cryptocurrency exchange giant, Binance has recovered $5.8 million worth of stolen cryptocurrency from last month’s Axie Infinity hack. The CEO of the exchange, Changpeng Zhao (CZ) took to Twitter to announce the recovery on Friday.
The crypto exchange’s boss said:
“The DPRK hacking group started to move their Axie Infinity stolen funds today.”
CZ further disclosed that the hackers had distributed the stolen cryptocurrency into 86 accounts. Part of it ($5.8 million) made it to Binance and was swiftly recovered.
Earlier this month, the $625 million exploit was reported by Naija FM. The crypto heist was one of the largest ever and raised several eyebrows in the crypto community.
After weeks of investigations, U.S security officials tied the theft to North Korea’s “Lazarus” hacker group. The U.S government has alleged that North Korea uses stolen funds to sponsor the development of nuclear weapons and missiles.
The exploiters used the Tornado Cash privacy tool to convert the stolen funds to Ether and other cryptocurrencies. However, crypto security experts managed to find the exploiter’s main address and it has been tagged “Ronin Bridge Exploiter ” on Etherscan.
Over the past few weeks, several thousands of dollars have been moved from the Ronin Bridge Exploiter wallet but it still holds over $285 million in crypto.
