eNaira Ranks No1 Among Global CBDCs as App Download Hits 756,000

  • Nigeria’s digital currency, the eNaira, has been ranked No 1 global retail CBDC, according to PwC’s CBDC Global Index
  • Guaranty Trust Bank’s Managing Director, Mariam Olusanya revealed that downloads for the CBDC app has reached 756,000 on AppStore and PlayStore
  • More than 35,000 transactions have been conducted on the digital currency platform

Nigeria’s central bank digital currency, the eNaira has been ranked No 1 retail CBDC in the world, according to PwC’s 2022 CBDC Global Index and Stablecoin Overview.

Nigeria ranked number one in terms of retail CBDC projects ahead of 9 other countries which are currently carrying out similar projects.

Behind Nigeria in the ranking were Bahamas and Mainland China, holding 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Jamaica, Eastern Caribbean, Ukraine, Uruguay, Thailand, Sweden, and the Republic of Korea followed.

The report also gave Nigeria’s eNaira a retail index value of 95, based on a BIS working paper, the World Bank, and PwC analysis.

Meanwhile, Managing Director of Guaranty Trust Bank, Mariam Olusanya yesterday disclosed that eNaira wallet downloads have surpassed 756,000 in six months.

The digital currency had recorded 700,000 downloads as of December 2021, meaning that were 56,000 downloads within the first quarter of 2021.


Olusanya said this while speaking in a virtual press conference after the Bankers Committee’s meeting.
