Over 29 million Nigerians are still waiting to link their NIN to their SIM cards
Government had previously extended the initial deadline to for the synchronization to Monday January 18
Report in the media indicated that only 176 million SIM cards have been duky linked with their owner’s Identity Numbers
About 29 million Nigeria telecom users are yet to synchronise their National Identity Numbers to their SIM cards despite the new deadline given to subscribers elapses Tuesday.
A top official of the federal government disclosed on Monday that only about 176m SIM cards had been synchronized with their owners’ NINs.
January 19 and February 9 were the respective deadlines for subscribers already with and those without NINs to synch their SIMs with their unique national identity numbers.
It was reported that the Nigeria Communication Commission had initially warned that the consequence of not linking the national identity number and SIM would result to mass blocking of telecom SIM. The commission however later denied it.
Meanwhile, we reported earlier that the Nigerian government has directed all telecommunication operators to deregister all SIM cards that are not synchronized with the National Identity Number (NIN) by December 30th 2020.
