Uruemu Adejinmi has officially become the first black woman to be elected Mayor in Ireland.
Ms Adejinmi who represents the Fianna Fáil political party was elected the Cathaoirleach of the Longford district.
Ms Adejinmi has been with Fianna Fáil for 5 years and she was appointed councillor in 2020.
Prior to that appointment, she was an executive officer at the department of health.
While speaking on RTÉ Radio One’s Drivetime, The Fianna Fáil Councilor claimed that the little involvement of black migrants in politics was a trigger for contesting.
Ms Adejinmi believes that by getting involved in politics, black people can start influencing policies for equal opportunities.
“I started actively engaging with my friends, encouraging them and sharing the advantages of getting more politically active, because we talk about issues in terms of getting access to work, getting equal opportunity, and government is where policy is decided upon, where legislation is drawn up, ” she said.

Uruemu Adejinmi migrated from Nigerian to Longford Ireland in 2003 and she identifies as African and Irish.
