In a place like Africa, it a rare occurrence to see powerful people that have committed a crime serve time for the crime committed.

However, that was not the case with ex-South African president Jacob Zuma after the former leader of the country was sentenced to 15 months in jail after failing to show up at a court hearing.

1. Ephraïm Inoni (Cameroon)

Ephraïm Inoni served as the prime minister of Cameroon between 2004 and 2009.

The former leader was suspected of corruption during his time in office and arrested on 16 April 2012.

Mr Ephraim was placed interrogated as part of the judicial process and he was placed under pre-trial detention.

2. Oladipo Diya (Nigeria)

Nigerian general Donaldson Oladipo Diya served as the vice president of Nigeria under military ruler, General Sani Abacha.

In 1997, Diya and some soldiers planned a coup to overthrow the military head of state. The alleged coup was uncovered and Diya was jailed until the untimely death of General Sani Abacha.

3. Abuzed Omar Dorda (Libya)

Abuzed Omar Dorda who served as the prime minister of Libya between 1990 and 1994, and is one of the powerful African leaders to have served jail time.

Dorda was part of former dictator Gaddafi’s inner circle and he was made to pay for the crimes of the government after being arrested in 2011.

Dorda was jailed until 2019 when he was released on health grounds and left Libya for Tunisia.

4. Frédéric Bamvuginyumvira (Burundi)

Frédéric Bamvuginyumvira was the first Vice President of Burundi but that didn’t stop him from being arrested for a petty crime.

Frédéric Bamvuginyumvira was briefly jailed in 2013 after being found guilty of trying to bribe Police officers.

5. Eugene Koffi Adoboli (Togo)

Eugene Koffi Adoboli served as the prime minister of Togo between 21 May 1999 and 31 August 2000.

In 2011 over a decade after leaving office, he was arrested for funds embezzlement and sentenced to 5 years in jail.
