The former president contested against Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, former Senate president Bukola Saraki, Governor of Akwa Ibom state Udom Emmanuel, Bala Mohammed, Pius Anyim and Sam Ohanbunwa.

Atiku Abubakar, 75, had contested with the incumbent president of the federal republic of Nigeria, President Muhammad Buhari in the 2019 presidential election but lost having gathered a total of 12 million votes.

The pdp presidential primary election which was conducted in the MKO Abiola stadium will see Abubakar Atiku be the flagbearer for the People Democratic Progress (PDP) having defeated all other contestants with a total of 371 votes with Rivers state governor Nyesom Wike who came second with a total of 231 votes and Bukola Saraki who came third with a total of 70 votes.

What proved to be the game-changer in the victory was the withdrawal of Sokoto state governor Aminu Tambuwa.

The governor stepped down just a few hours before the election, handing over his support to Abubakar Atiku. It is more surprising to know that he wasn’t present to celebrate the victory of Atiku yesterday after the election.
