President Muhammadu Buhari addressed Nigerians with a nationwide broadcast on the independence day and discussed the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria.
The president stated that he had provided five conditions for the removal of the Twitter ban in Nigeria after suspending the microblogging platform in June.
The five conditions are
i. Twitter must pay attention to national security and cohesion
ii. Registration in Nigeria
iii. Physical presence and representation in Nigeria
iv. A platform for dispute resolution
v. Local content
“ Following the suspension of Twitter operations, Twitter Inc. reached out to the Federal Government of Nigeria to resolve the impasse. Subsequently, I constituted a Presidential Committee to engage Twitter to explore the possibility of resolving the issue.”
“The Committee, along with its Technical Team, has engaged with Twitter and has addressed several key issues. These are National Security and Cohesion; Registration, Physical presence and Representation; Fair Taxation; Dispute Resolution; and Local Content.”
It’s been almost 4 months since the Twitter ban in Nigeria after the platform deleted a controversial tweet by President Buhari.
The suspension had been heavily criticized as activists claim that the government is trying to suppress the voice of people in the country.
The information minister, Lai Mohammed, recently said that Twitter officials were already meeting the criteria for the removal of the ban and the issue would be resolved soon.
