Zuma submitted himself to the Estcourt Correctional Centre in his home town KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday evening.

The 79-year-old was handed this jail sentence after failing to show up at a corruption hearing for alleged crimes during his tenure.

Naija FM reported on June 29 that Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison for failing to show up at the hearing.

The sentencing of the former president was highly shocking, given that it was the first time that an ex-president will serve jail time.

Zuma who was reluctant to turn himself in on Wednesday eventually decided to do so on Wednesday, according to a short statement by the Jacob Zuma Foundation.

During Zuma’s tenure, businessmen were accused of conspiring with politicians to influence decision-making.

The ex-president had often claimed that he had no hand in the corruption and it was a political conspiracy.

Jacob Zuma still retains a strong following in his hometown KwaZulu-Natal where loyalists gathered on Sunday and Wednesday to prevent his arrest.
