Nigeria’s Super Eagles Climb up to 3rd in Africa Despite Early AFCON Exit

  • Nigeria’s football team is now ranked 32nd in the world, up from 36th in the January rankings
  • Nigeria also moved up to 3rd from fifth in Africa, sitting behind only Senegal and Morocco in the latest ranking

Despite the early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have moved up the latest FIFA ranking that was released by the global football body.

In the latest ranking, the Eagles, climbed 4 places to 32nd from the previous 36th rank in the January rankings.

Their showing at the competition was also enough to earn them a jump 2 places up to 3rd in Africa from 5th in the last ranking.

Nigeria gathered 31.13 points, the third-highest behind AFCON finalists Egypt (45.28) and AFCON hosts Cameroon (43.47).

The result of this is that Nigeria is now ranked behind only AFCON champions Senegal and Morocco in Africa’s ranking.

Newly crowned AFCON champions, Senegal retained their position as the highest-ranked nation in Africa and even moved up to 18th from 20 in the global ranking.

This represents the highest rank for the Teranga Lions of Senegal as they celebrate their first-ever AFCON win.

Senegal is followed by Morocco, Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Cameroon, Algeria, Mali, along with Ivory Coast, they make up the top 10 best teams on the continent.
