The Senegalese star reportedly refused to play to avoid wearing the rainbow-coloured LGBT kit.
Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gueye reportedly missed his team’s match on Saturday because he wanted to avoid wearing a shirt that had its number in rainbow colours.
Over the weekend, players across France wore the special shirts as an expression of solidarity for the upcoming International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, on Tuesday, May 17.
The manager of the team, Mauricio Pochettino had disclosed that Gueye did not have an injury but was absent due to “personal reasons”.
French outlet RMC Sport has now claimed that the reason that the former Everton man failed to feature is that he didn’t want to wear a shirt with rainbow colours. The report also claims that Gueye missed the equivalent commemorative match last season but PSG claimed that it was because of gastroenteritis.
Rouge Direct, an association that tackles homophobia in sports has demanded that the French League and PSG demand the footballer’s reason for missing the game.

The president of France LGBT+ Sports Federation, Eric Arassus, has also demanded that the French league champions sanction the footballer. Arassus claimed that Gueye’s absence shows that the club and League let homophobia happen.
Idrissa Gueye, 32, is a devout Muslim from Senegal. In Gueye’s country, homosexuality is a crime and punishable by up to 5 years in prison.
