Even though Facebook does its best to curb fake profiles of celebrities, the company has failed in this regard a couple of times.
More recently, this happened with a fake profile of billionaire Elon Musk.
According to The verge, the company accidentally verified a fan page of the Tesla CEO as the world’s richest man official account.
The page which has 153,000 followers appears to be run by a Bitcoin scammer. The account made a post about a phony Bitcoin giveaway but deleted it later.
The page however acknowledges that it is only an Elon Musk fan page so it is not clear how Facebook made the error.
In the about section, it says:
“This is a fan page, uploading tweets, etc from him.”
However, the URL for the Bitcoin scammer page ends in “ElonMuskoffici”, which indicates that attempts were made to fool people into believing that it belongs to Elon Musk.
In the page transparency section, it also shows that the people who manage the page are in Egypt while Elon Musk resides in Texas.
Facebook’s verification requires that people submit proof of identity but scammers have managed to bypass this process.
