A new World Health Organisation (WHO) report has confirmed that Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV) infection increases your chances of having a critical COVID 19 infection.
The report was based on a clinical survey that showed that 23.1 of people living with HIV that were hospitalized for COVID 19 died.
The survey was carried out in 37 countries and monitored data from HIV patients who also had COVID-19 in the hospital.
Conditions such as diabetes and hypertension which are common in HIV patients have been associated with a more severe form of COVID infection. People living with this disease are at more risk of death.
The report has promoted the need for people living with HIV to use Anti Retro Viral (ARV) and manage other underlying conditions.
The result has also caused a need for people living with HIV infections to be prioritised during vaccination.
HIV remains a public health problem globally as it is responsible for the deaths of 34.7 million.
