Websters dictionary adds ‘sexting’, ‘aha-moment’, as new words

By Olamide Jasanya

The Webster’s Collegiate dictionary recently got updated with the addition of 100 new words.

The editors of the 114-year-old dictionary added new words including ‘F-bomb’ which first appeared in 1988 in a story about late basket ball player, Gary Carter. Other words included are sexting, energy drink, ear worm, aha moment, life coach, and bucket list.

According to one of the editors, this year’s addition is more eclectic unlike the previous, ‘this is a list of really descriptive and evocative, fun words. Some years, not so fun. Some years it’s a lot of science words. Some years it’s a lot of words around really heavy topics’ , she said.

Here are few of the new words and their meanings

Flexitarian (n): One whose normally meatless diet occasionally includes meat or fish.

Game Changer (n) A newly introduced element or factor that changes an existing situation or activity in a significant way.

Aha moment (n): A moment of sudden realization, inspiration, insight, recognition  or comprehension.

Brain Camp (n) An instance of temporary mental confusion resulting in an error or lapse or judgement.

Bucket List (n): A list of things that one has not done before but wants to do before dying.

Energy Drink (n): A usually carbonated beverage that typically contains caffeine and other ingredients intended to increase the drinker’s energy.

Sexting (n): The sending of sexually explicit messages or images by cell phones.

Usually before a new word is included in the dictionary, evidence of its usage over a long time must be ascertained by editors. Such words must have been used in a lot of medium including movies, designer labels, frozen food and media.
